New Quebec Text Alert Service Warns Residents of Heat Waves

Quebec has rolled out a new public alert system called ‘Conseils climat’ (translates to climate tips) to warn residents ahead of heat waves and offer tips to stay safe during extreme weather events.

The free service sends alerts by phone, text, or email—depending on user preference—before a heat wave hits. Subscribers receive tips on how to protect their health, especially if they are more vulnerable to heat-related risks. This system is on top of the nationwide Alert Ready emergency notifications, which is run by Pelmorex (owners of The Weather Network).

The program targets older adults (65+), people with chronic health conditions (such as diabetes, heart, lung, or kidney problems), and young children—groups more likely to suffer during heat events. Anyone living in covered regions can sign up.

While the focus is currently on heat waves, the province says the system may eventually expand to include alerts for other climate-related risks such as smog or pollen.

Funded by Quebec’s Plan for a Green Economy 2030, Conseils climat covers most regions across the province, including Montreal, Laval, Estrie, and Gaspésie. Northern areas like Nunavik and Nord-du-Québec are not included, as they’re not expected to face extreme heat in the near future.

To sign up, residents can call 1-866-982-7282 or register online. Messages are available in French and English, and users can unsubscribe or change their alert settings at any time.
