Why Your Phone Will Buzz on Nov. 20: Alert Ready Test Explained

A test of Canada’s Alert Ready emergency notification system is set to take place on Wednesday, November 20. This test ensures that the system is functioning as intended to notify Canadians during life-threatening situations such as severe weather events, fires, or AMBER alerts.
The system is powered by private company Pelmorex based out of Oakville, Ontario, the parent company of The Weather Network.
The test will be conducted at different times across the country, depending on the province or territory. Essentially, your compatible phone connected to an LTE network will make a loud scary beeping noise and buzz if it’s not in silent mode. This is always a hilarious sight to see and hear when you’re in a busy place like Costco when it happens.
When and Where Will the Alert Test Happen?
Here are the scheduled test times for each region:
- Alberta: 1:55 PM MST
- British Columbia: 1:55 PM PST
- Manitoba: 1:55 PM CST
- Newfoundland & Labrador: 10:45 AM NST
- New Brunswick: 10:55 AM AST
- Nova Scotia: 1:55 PM AST
- Nunavut: 2:00 PM EST
- Northwest Territories: 1:55 PM MST
- Ontario: 12:55 PM EST
- Prince Edward Island: 12:55 PM AST
- Quebec: No test scheduled
- Saskatchewan: 1:55 PM CST
- Yukon: 1:55 PM YST
In 2024 alone, 848 emergency alerts have been issued, said Alert Ready. Canadians cannot opt out of these wireless alerts, including test notifications, as they are essential for public safety. For those who are on shift work and sleeping during the day, be prepared for this as you may get woken up to your phone blaring.
Alert Ready will once again deliver alerts through radio, television, and wireless networks. Consider yourself warned!
