End-to-end encrypted messaging app, Telegram, is teaming up with Elon Musk’s AI company xAI in a one-year partnership that will bring the Grok chatbot to over one billion users on the messaging platform.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced the deal on May 28, revealing that Telegram will receive $300 million in cash and equity from xAI, plus 50% of all revenue generated from xAI subscriptions sold through Telegram.

“This also strengthens Telegram’s financial position,” said Durov in a post on his official channel. “Together, we win.”

The partnership–which has yet to be finalized–will integrate Grok across all Telegram apps starting summer 2025. Features will include smart text editing, chat summaries, document digests, group chat moderation tools, link insights, and fact-checking in channels. Users will also get AI-powered sticker and avatar generation tools.

The announcement came just one day after Telegram revealed it has surpassed 15 million paid Premium subscribers, doubling its numbers in just one year.

While Durov made the announcement, Musk replied, “No deal has been signed,” less than an hour ago. That prompted a reply from Durov to say, “True. Agreed in principle, but formalities are pending.” Looks like xAI and Telegram are still ironing out the final details.

Durov shared a concept video of the Grok AI features coming to the Telegram app, which you can see below:
