Instagram Finally Fits iPhone and Android Photos Perfectly
Instagram is making it easier to share photos the way you actually shoot them from your iPhone or Android smartphone.
On Wednesday, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced that the app now supports 3:4 aspect ratio images—the standard format for most smartphone cameras.
That means if you take a photo on your phone and upload it directly to Instagram, it will now appear exactly as it was shot, without awkward cropping or resizing.
“Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the format that almost every phone camera defaults to,” Mosseri said. “From now on, if you upload a 3:4 image, it’ll now appear just exactly as you shot it.”
When Instagram first launched in 2010, it only supported square images (1:1 ratio), a decision inspired by Polaroid cameras. That meant users had to crop wider or taller shots, often losing part of the frame.
In 2015, Instagram introduced support for portrait (4:5) and landscape (1.91:1) formats, giving creators a bit more flexibility. But 3:4—despite being the default for iPhone and Android cameras—wasn’t fully supported until now. Talk about a big ‘finally’.
This update brings Instagram in line with how people naturally shoot photos today, allowing for a more seamless upload experience—especially for casual users who don’t want to reframe every image.
