XChat Encrypted Mssaging Now Rolling to All X Users

Elon Musk has just announced the rollout of XChat, a new direct messaging feature on X (formerly Twitter), aiming to enhance user privacy and communication capabilities (via TechCrunch).

XChat introduces features such as disappearing messages, support for all file types, and audio/video calling, all underpinned by what Musk describes as “Bitcoin-style” encryption.

Built on the Rust programming language, XChat is designed to offer a secure and versatile messaging experience. The feature allows users to make audio and video calls without the need for a phone number, facilitating seamless cross-platform communication. Additionally, messages can be protected behind a four-digit passcode, adding an extra layer of security.

Despite these advancements, questions remain regarding the specifics of the “Bitcoin-style” encryption Musk references.

While Bitcoin utilizes public key cryptography for transaction security, it does not employ encryption in the traditional sense. This has led to speculation about the exact nature of XChat’s security architecture and whether it truly offers end-to-end encryption comparable to platforms like Signal or WhatsApp.

XChat is currently being rolled out to users, with some features already accessible to paid subscribers. The introduction of this feature aligns with Musk’s broader vision to transform X into an “everything app,” integrating various functionalities such as messaging, payments, and more, similar to China’s WeChat.

The success of XChat will, however, depend not only on its functionality but also on the platform’s ability to address privacy concerns and provide clear information about its encryption protocols.
