OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Memory Features to Free Users
OpenAI has announced the expansion of ChatGPT’s memory capabilities to free-tier users, aiming to provide more personalized and context-aware interactions across its user base.
We’re starting to roll out a lightweight version of memory improvements to Free users. In addition to existing saved memories, ChatGPT now references your recent conversations to provide more personalized responses. https://t.co/RZFYUC9JAT https://t.co/O8lubCBNZO

This rollout, initiated earlier today, introduces a lightweight version of the memory feature previously exclusive to Plus and Pro subscribers.
ChatGPT’s memory operates through two primary mechanisms:
- Saved Memories: These are user-specific details that ChatGPT retains upon request. For instance, if a user instructs, “Remember that I am vegetarian,” ChatGPT will store this preference for future interactions.
- Chat History Reference: This feature allows ChatGPT to recall information from recent conversations to provide more relevant responses. While it doesn’t remember every detail, it uses contextual cues to enhance the user experience.
Users have full control over these features and can manage them via the Settings > Personalization menu. Options include enabling or disabling memory functions, deleting specific memories, or clearing all stored data. For conversations that shouldn’t influence future interactions, users can initiate a “Temporary Chat,” ensuring no data is saved or referenced.
Starting today, the memory feature is being rolled out to free users worldwide, with specific considerations for regions like the European Economic Area (EEA), including the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. In these areas, users will receive prompts to enable memory features or can manually activate them through their settings.
In other regions, the feature is being enabled automatically for users who have memory settings turned on. OpenAI emphasizes that users remain in control of their data. They can view what ChatGPT remembers by asking, “What do you remember about me?” and can instruct the AI to forget specific information or clear all memories as desired.

The introduction of memory features to free-tier users signifies OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing user experience across all subscription levels. By remembering user preferences and context, ChatGPT can provide more tailored responses, making interactions more efficient and personalized.
