Apple Intelligence Gets Major Boost at WWDC: What’s New

Apple introduced a suite of advanced AI capabilities across its devices at WWDC 2025 earlier today, enhancing user experience with intelligent, on-device features. In an even more significant move, developers can now tap into the Apple Intelligence on-device foundation model to create powerful, private AI features for their apps.
“Last year, we took the first steps on a journey to bring users intelligence that’s helpful, relevant, easy to use, and right where users need it, all while protecting their privacy. Now, the models that power Apple Intelligence are becoming more capable and efficient, and we’re integrating features in even more places across each of our operating systems,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering.
“We’re also taking the huge step of giving developers direct access to the on-device foundation model powering Apple Intelligence, allowing them to tap into intelligence that is powerful, fast, built with privacy, and available even when users are offline. We think this will ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps users rely on every day. We can’t wait to see what developers create.”
Here are the highlights from the new Apple Intelligence features and improvements Apple showed off today:
Live Translation
Apple’s Live Translation feature enables real-time translation during conversations in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls. Powered by on-device models, it ensures privacy while facilitating seamless communication across languages.
Genmoji and Image Playground
Genmoji now allows users to create personalized animated emojis from a mix of emoji and text, instead of just text descriptions, adding a fun, expressive element to messaging. Powered by ChatGPT, Image Playground now lets users generate images in various styles, including animation and sketch, directly from their devices. These tools integrate seamlessly with apps like Messages, Notes, and Pages, enhancing creativity.
Workout Buddy on Apple Watch
Workout Buddy is a new Apple Intelligence-powered feature coming to Apple Watch that will provide users with personalized, motivational insights for their workout session based on their workout data and fitness history.
Developer Access to On-Device AI Models
Apple is offering developers access to its on-device foundation model, enabling the creation of intelligent, privacy-focused experiences within apps. This move aims to foster innovation while maintaining user trust.
Apple also touted improvements to visual intelligence, new Apple Intelligence features in the Shortcuts app, and more. These enhancements signify Apple’s commitment to integrating AI seamlessly into its ecosystem, prioritizing user privacy and enhancing functionality across devices.
Despite weeks of leaks tempering expectations, Apple’s AI announcements at WWDC still felt underwhelming — especially when stacked against what rivals like Google and OpenAI are already offering. Then again, this is the same company that didn’t let iPhone users freely move app icons on the Home Screen until 2020 — a feature Android users had enjoyed for over a decade. Apple has always done things its own way, on its own time.
