Apple Pulls the Plug on Intel Macs With macOS Tahoe

Apple has confirmed that macOS Tahoe will be the final version of macOS to support Intel-based Macs, marking the end of an era for the company’s older hardware.

Speaking at the Platforms State of the Union event at WWDC, Apple’s Senior Director of Developer Relations, Matthew Firlik, said the company is now fully focused on its own Apple Silicon chips.

“Metal 4 is a great example of the tight integration of our software with Apple Silicon, creating a whole new class of experiences,” said Firlik. “Since we began the transition to Apple Silicon over five years ago, we’ve been able to add incredible features like Apple Intelligence, Game Mode, Presenter Overlay, and more.”

Apple finished switching its entire Mac lineup to Apple Silicon two years ago. Firlik told developers it’s now time to prioritize these newer machines.

“Apple Silicon enables us all to achieve things that were previously unimaginable, and it’s time to put all of our focus and innovation there,” he said. “macOS Tahoe will be the final release for Intel Macs.”

Firlik encouraged developers to help their users move over to Apple Silicon Macs, saying “now is a great time to help your users migrate to the Apple Silicon versions of your apps.”

The announcement means future macOS updates will no longer work on Intel-based devices. Apple first used Intel chips (Core Duo) in early 2006 with the iMac and MacBook Pro, announced at Macworld.

Pulling the plug literally means it will not work. So your headline says Tahoe will not work with Intel, and the article goes on to explain that Tahoe will work with intel.
