Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Sales Records, Selling 3.5 Million Units in 4 Days

Nintendo has announced that its new Nintendo Switch 2 console has sold over 3.5 million units in four short days, setting a new industry-wide record.
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on Friday, June 5th and has since become “the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware ever globally,” says Nintendo in a press release. In comparison, the original Nintendo Switch took its first month on the market to reach 2.7 million units sold when it launched back in 2017. By all accounts, Nintendo is now well-positioned to reach (or even exceed) its target of 15 million units sold by March 2026.
What the company does not point out is that the Nintendo Switch isn’t only the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware ever, but it’s also the fastest-selling video game console of all time. PlayStation 4 took two weeks to sell 2.1 million units in 2013. Sony’s PlayStation 5, which was hit by supply constraints and had a staggered launch, took seven weeks to sell 4.4 million units. To meet demand and ensure that it would not be affected by supply constraints, Nintendo ramped up its production to 20 million units by 2026, working with Samsung for its chips.
In Canada, Nintendo Switch 2 starts at $629 for the base console. However, the company has also launched a $699 Mario Kart World bundle for Nintendo Switch 2. This has allowed Nintendo to make great use of two SKUs to propel its sales numbers. Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn’t revealed any player stats for Mario Kart World, so it’s conjecture to theorize how many bundles have been sold since launch.
“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser said in the press release. “We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”
Nintendo Switch 2 offers players a larger, upgraded 1080p display (with up to 4K output when docked) and supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The refreshed hardware refined the magnetic Joy-Con controllers with mouse support. Nintendo Switch 2 also offers a faster processor, so existing Nintendo Switch games often run better with free (or purchasable Upgrade Pack) patches. The hardware also includes GameChat functionality, allowing players to use voice chat and game screen sharing functions.
The remainder of 2025 bodes very well for Nintendo. Next month, the company is primed to release Donkey Kong Bananza on July 17. 2025 also marks the launch of Drag X Drive, Metroid Prime 4, Kirby Air Riders, and Pokémon Z-A.
