Meta AI App Accidentally Broadcasts Private Chats to All

Meta’s AI app has ignited a backlash over serious privacy loopholes, with the app’s Discover tab flooded with deeply personal content, ranging from medical questions and legal advice, to identifiable user details (via TechCrunch).

The app, released in April 2025, was designed to provide a friendly chat-based assistant integrated across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger—and offering a public-facing Discover feed.

While Meta insists users must explicitly share a chat to make it public, many users appear unaware they’ve exposed private conversations, with sensitive data suddenly accessible to anyone scrolling through the app.

From rashes and bowel issues to immigration questions and court-related examples, users have inadvertently shared intimate staff and health queries. In some cases, posts have included voice recordings, employment documents, and even rental termination notices—tied back to public Instagram profiles.

Privacy experts warn this mix of oversharing comes from a misleading user experience. A prominent “Share” button and minimal public warning screen appear to lead some users into assuming they’re simply saving a chat privately. As Mozilla and the Electronic Privacy Information Center have argued, users aren’t clearly alerted about the public nature of the feed—or how their data is being used.

Moreover, unlike rivals like ChatGPT and Claude, Meta AI lacks a memory‑free mode or robust opt-out controls for data collection—and doesn’t alert users about how their data might feed back into the platform’s AI training.

Until Meta strengthens its privacy controls, here’s how you can take proactive steps:

  • Double-check before tapping “Share.” Assume every chat is visible unless you’re sure the feed is private.
  • Audit connected accounts. Public Instagram or Facebook profiles linked to Meta AI may reveal user identity.
  • Use privacy settings. Review app options and disable AI memory or sharing features whenever possible.
  • Treat all AI conversations as public by default. Even if they seem private, guard personal details accordingly.

Meta’s innovative fusion of AI chat and social feed may hold promise, but its current execution tilts toward a privacy disaster.
