Instagram’s Threads Introduces Tap-to-Reveal Spoilers Feature

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has today revealed that the Threads app is rolling out a built-in spoiler feature, letting users subtly mask sensitive text or images until tapped or clicked.

On mobile, the hidden content appears as a field of floating dots; on desktop, users see a greyed-out block. Tapping reveals the concealed content. Meta spokesperson Alec Booker confirmed the rollout is a global test, currently optimized for mobile devices with desktop polish in progress.

This addition addresses a common gripe among users: encountering unintentional spoilers for movies, TV shows, sports results, or book plots while browsing. By giving creators control over what’s hidden, Threads helps ensure followers choose when—and if—to reveal content.

Threads’ spoiler function has been in development for months. App researcher Radu Oncescu first spotted blacked-out text testing in May, as the platform fine-tunes the composer experience. Earlier in January, insider Alessandro Paluzzi showcased a “Mark spoiler” button in the posting interface, hinting at a native implementation akin to Reddit’s formatting but seamlessly integrated into Threads’ composition workflow.

This isn’t Threads’ first time borrowing from mobile messaging. Apple introduced a similar concept in iMessage back in 2016 with its Invisible Ink effect.

First shown at WWDC in June and released with iOS 10 on September 13, 2016, Invisible Ink blurred message text and images until the recipient tapped them, giving users control over sensitive content exposure—just as Threads is aiming to do. While Apple’s feature operates at the device-to-device level in private messaging, Threads applies it in a public-facing social feed.

The rollout is still early and currently limited. Threads hasn’t confirmed when it will reach all users or expand to desktop.
