Lyft’s expansion into Quebec follows years of groundwork, including extensive regulatory coordination and recruitment initiatives. Beginning May 8, 2025, the company began enlisting drivers across the province and familiarized itself with Quebec’s licensing framework, especially following the 2019 Bill 17 which restructured taxi regulations.

Initially focusing on Montreal and Quebec City, Lyft has plans to broaden its footprint to cities such as Gatineau, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, and Saguenay in the upcoming months

Passengers can book rides using the familiar Lyft app. To get started, download the app, enter payment info, and order a ride. To mark the launch, Lyft is offering a 50% discount on the first five trips made within two weeks of signing up, via promo code QUEBEC. Riders can also compare fares in-app with competing options like Uber, local taxis, and cooperative app Eva.

New Quebec-based drivers can also receive a CA$250 bonus for completing 25 rides within 30 daysm part of the onboarding push begun in early May. Additional requirements include vehicle inspections and displaying both the Lyft emblem and a Québec mobility accessory, mandates set by the SAAQ (Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec).

Lyft has collaborated closely with Quebec officials to meet provincial rules for insurance, language, vehicle standards, security checks, and driver training. At launch, daily vehicle inspections and clearly visible emblems are compulsory.

Lyft’s entry shakes up a rideshare sector dominated by Uber, active in Quebec since 2014 . It also competes with Eva, which promotes cooperative ownership and reduced platform fees.
