Telus Confirms First 3G Shutdown Timeline—Here’s When
Telus and its flanker brands, Koodo Mobile and Public Mobile, have confirmed they will shut down their 3G network in Manitoba in two stages over the next year.
The first phase begins this December 31, 2025, when 3G service will end in rural areas outside of Winnipeg and Brandon. The second phase wraps things up on March 31, 2026, cutting off 3G in Winnipeg and Brandon. There is no set date for the rest of the 3G network yet.
Why is this happening? The move is part of Telus’ ongoing plan to retire older wireless networks and shift focus to newer technologies like LTE and 5G it says. Telus says other countries such as the U.S. have already started shutting down 3G networks and they are going to do the same as the network ages.
What does this mean? If you’re with Telus, Koodo, or Public Mobile and still using a 3G-only phone, you’ll need to upgrade to a VoLTE-capable device to stay connected. Telus says customers affected by the change may have already received a promo code by text with discounts for new phones and plans to upgrade.
You can either switch to a supported phone and stay with your current provider or use the promo to move to a Telus plan. If you need help or want to redeem an offer, you can visit a Telus store or call 1-866-975-3052.
Telus says they’ll continue notifying customers in advance if more 3G shutdowns are planned in other provinces.
Those still using 3G networks on Telus will be charged a $3 monthly fee. Telus says only 2.3% of its customers are using its legacy 3G networks. Of course, if you don’t have a compatible device you’ll need to get a newer phone.
Thanks Steven
