Bluesky Introduces Enhanced Notification Settings and More

Bluesky has just rolled out a major update to its notification system, giving users greater control over how and when they receive notifications on the platform.

“At Bluesky, we’re constantly working to help you personalize your experience,” the decentralized social media platform said in a new blog post. “We know that staying connected means different things to different people, and sometimes, you just need to cut through the noise.”

Bluesky detailed three key changes coming to the platform. First up is Activity Notifications, which allow users to opt in for push and in-app alerts from specific accounts.

If there’s a creator or news source you want to stay updated on, you can now tap the new bell icon next to the ‘Follow’ button on their profile — provided they’ve enabled the feature. Once activated, you’ll receive instant notifications for their posts and, optionally, their replies. Users can easily manage this list in Settings > Notifications > Activity Notifications.

Bluesky has also introduced Enhanced Notification Settings. These revamped controls let you fine-tune exactly who can notify you, with options for Everyone, People you follow, or No one. Notification categories you can now customize include replies, mentions, quotes, likes, reposts, new followers, and even interactions on posts you’ve reposted. Push notifications can also be toggled on or off per category, giving users granular control over their experience.

Notably, Bluesky’s previous priority notifications feature has been phased out in favour of these more advanced controls. For those who used priority notifications, your preferences have been automatically migrated. Setting reply, mention, and quote notifications to People you follow now replicates the same filtering that priority notifications previously offered.

Finally, Bluesky has launched Repost Notifications. Users can now get notified when others like or repost content they’ve previously reposted — great news for those who love curating content. These alerts can also be customized in the new settings.

“We believe these updates will empower you to shape your Bluesky experience to be exactly what you want,” the company concluded.

Bluesky continues to add new, more powerful features to support its growing user base. Back in April, Bluesky’s 1.100 software update introduced the new Explore page and added chat reactions in DMs. More recently, the platform launched blue checkmark verification to combat impersonation.
