Apple Maps Bug Forces Users Onto Canada’s Priciest Toll Road

Apple maps toll.

Some Apple Maps users in the Toronto area are reporting that the app is mistakenly routing them onto the privately-owned 407 ETR toll highway—even when the “Avoid Tolls” option is turned on.

The issue has been ongoing since at least July 4 and affects all Apple platforms, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and web, according to a report from MacRumors.

The mistake could lead to unexpected charges for drivers, as the 407 ETR is the most expensive toll road in Canada, with fees reaching up to 85 cents per kilometre for regular passenger vehicles. The toll is far more than flat-rate tolls like the $50.25 Confederation Bridge or Quebec’s $3–6 A25 bridge. Reddit users complained about the costly Apple Maps bug.

The confusion may stem from a recent change to a nearby stretch of the highway. As of June 1, the Ontario government removed tolls from the provincially-owned part of Highway 407, located just east of the 407 ETR. Apple may have updated Maps to reflect that change—but accidentally treated the entire route as toll-free.

MacRumors says it was able to reproduce the problem and has notified Apple. A fix may be on the way, but until then, drivers using Apple Maps in the region should double-check their routes to avoid any surprise toll bills.

So if Apple Maps sends you down the 407, just know your wallet’s about to take the scenic route. It’s not just a toll road–it’s a highway robbery in cents per kilometre.

"Forces"? Like when your GPS tells you to go down that goat trail or leap than span of water where a bridge used to be?
Okay, some folks may be unfamiliar with particular locations, but common sense and the few reading skills required of highway signs might go a long way, too.

But maybe these are the same people who believe AI is correct 100% of the time…
