Apple Plans Home Security Devices to Take on Nest and Ring: Report
Apple is preparing a new wave of AI-focused products, including a tabletop robot, a smart speaker with a screen, and home-security cameras, according to people familiar with the company’s plans, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports.
The tabletop robot—targeted for 2027—is described as an iPad-like display mounted on a moving arm that can swivel, track users around a room, and take part in conversations. A redesigned version of Siri will be at the center of the device, with a more lifelike personality and the ability to suggest actions or information during discussions.
Before that, Apple plans to release a smart-home display in 2026, offering home controls, music playback, video calls, and possibly the new Siri interface. Sources say this is part of a broader push into entry-level smart-home gear, an area where Apple has lagged behind Amazon and Google.
Home security is also on the roadmap. Apple is developing cameras that can recognize faces, detect movement, and automate household tasks—such as turning lights on or off based on who is in the room. A video doorbell with facial recognition is also being tested. The said goal is for Apple to compete with the likes of Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest in home security.
Internally, the robot project is known as J595, the smart display as J490, and the new Siri system as Linwood. An alternate version of Siri, code-named Glenwood, could use technology from outside partners. The goal is to boost Apple’s AI capabilities after missing the first wave of generative AI hype.
The company is also exploring other hardware for the longer term, including a mobile robot on wheels, smart glasses, a foldable iPhone, and a hybrid MacBook–iPad device.
It may be too little too late for Apple to be planning these home security devices now. Unless they offer better features and price points, it will be hard to make people switch. What will Apple’s next big hit be?
