Google’s Gemini App Adds Temporary Chats, Now Remembers What You Say

Google gemini privacy.

Google’s Gemini AI app is getting new features aimed at making conversations more tailored while giving users more say over their data.

The app can now remember details from past conversations to offer more personalized responses. This “personal context” setting is switched on by default but can be turned off in the app’s settings. When enabled, Gemini may factor in your previous chats to make its suggestions feel more relevant — for example, by recommending books or party themes tied to earlier topics you’ve discussed. The feature is starting to roll out today for users of the 2.5 Pro model in select countries, with plans to expand to more regions and models soon.

This memory feature now brings Gemini up to speed with a similar feature ChatGPT launched back in April–remembering what you say. This is supposed to save you time as you don’t need to repeat information to Gemini.

A new ‘Temporary Chat’ option is also launching, designed for quick, one-off conversations that won’t be saved or used to shape future replies. These chats won’t appear in your history, won’t be used to train Google’s AI models, and will be kept for up to 72 hours solely to process your request and feedback. It’s essentially an incognito chat with Gemini.

Google is also updating how it handles uploads like files and photos. The Gemini Apps Activity setting will be renamed Keep Activity in the coming weeks. When turned on, a sample of your future uploads may be used to help improve Google services, but this can be disabled at any time.

Earlier this month, Google added a separate control for whether audio, video, and screen shares through Gemini can be used to improve its services. That setting is off by default.
