Tesla Debuts 6-Seat Model Y L in China—Is Canada Next?

Tesla has introduced a new stretched version of its best-selling SUV in China, the Model Y L, a three-row, six-seat electric vehicle that adds more space, comfort, and luxury features aimed at families.

The Model Y L starts at 339,000 yuan (about $47,000 USD or $65,100 CAD) and offers an estimated 327 miles of EPA range (527 miles CLTC). Deliveries in China are scheduled to begin in September 2025, reports Tesla North. EV competitors in China are eating away at Tesla’s sales, so this new model looks to address that.

Key Specs and Features

On the outside, Tesla is offering a new Starlight Gold paint option, plus subtle styling tweaks such as a revised rear brake light and new wheels.

Tesla North notes that the launch drew heavy interest, with over 35,000 reported orders on day one. The SUV is already appearing in Tesla showrooms across China ahead of next month’s first deliveries.

The Bigger Question

Right now, the Model Y L is exclusive to China. A European release seems plausible, given recent sightings of the vehicle testing in Germany. But for Canada, the situation is less clear. Tesla hasn’t said whether the Model Y L will come to North America, raising the question: will Canadian buyers ever get access to this more spacious Model Y, or will it remain a China-only model?

Well, we do now have a clue according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Replying to a post on X on early Wednesday morning, he said, “This variant of the Model Y doesn’t start production in the US until the end of next year. Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.”

If this Model Y L does start production at Tesla factories it would take place at its Fremont, California factory or Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.

But right now U.S. tariffs are causing Tesla to reallocate Model Y vehicles made in at Giga Berlin to come to Canada and not the USA. Ottawa has also slapped 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs which has affected Tesla cars made at its Shanghai Gigafactory. So we’ll have to wait and see on this new Model Y L in Canada. The new SUV would likely eat into Model X sales given its much lower pricing compared to OG premium SUV.

20k too expensive. These companies have got to drop prices big time.

Yeah, the USD price would make it attractive, but our CAD is losing value every day.

No it isn’t. The CAD is TWO CENTS less today than it was five years ago vs the USD. Relax.

Why does China get large models if families largely only have 1 child and Chinese people in general are small and petite?
