Garmin’s Fenix 8 Pro Lets You Text Without a Phone
Garmin has just introduced its Fenix 8 Pro smartwatches, featuring built in satellite and cellular messaging, and a record bright MicroLED display for off grid adventures.

This release marks the first time Garmin offers phone independent communication in its multisport watch line, and brings users a new level of safety and freedom during outdoor adventures. It also body slams the Apple Watch Ultra, which lacks satellite messaging (for now it seems).
The Fenix 8 Pro line comes in two display options. The standard AMOLED version is available in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes. The standout is a MicroLED version in 51 mm size, with the brightest smartwatch screen ever crafted reaching 4500 nits of brightness and made with over 400,000 individual LEDs.
Connectivity is powered by InReach, long trusted in Garmin’s handheld satellite communicators. Users can send text messages and location check ins without a phone by using Garmin Messenger or compatible Garmin smartwatches.
On LTE networks, users can make limited voice calls using Messenger, share LiveTrack links, get updated weather reports, and even trigger SOS alerts, that go through Garmin’s Response center to reach search and rescue teams or emergency contacts. All models require a connectivity subscription, which starts at around US $8 per month.

The Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED gets up to 27 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, and starts at $1,199.99. The Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED gets up to 10 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, and is $1,999.99. Both models will be available to purchase on September 8, 2025.
