Microsoft and LG Electronics to Bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to Select Vehicles

Microsoft has announced a partnership with LG Electronics to bring its Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to “select internet-connected vehicles.”

As announced by the company on an Xbox Wire post, passengers in select vehicles will be able to stream and play games via the Xbox app. This is all thanks to Microsoft’s ongoing partnership with LG, integrating Xbox into the webOS Automotive platform.

As confirmed, players will need an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. With it, passengers will be able to boot into hundreds of compatible games like Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War: Reloaded and upcoming first-party titles like The Outer Worlds 2.

An automotive data plan is required to access streaming services, the company confirms. In addition, players will have to have a compatible Bluetooth controller available as well. Once the player is ready to access Xbox Cloud Gaming, all they must do is launch the Xbox app from the car’s infotainment system, log into their Xbox Game Pass subscription and select a title.

The latest Xbox Cloud Gaming expansion plays well into the ‘This is an Xbox’ campaign. By bringing Xbox services to vehicles, Microsoft is once again bending the narrative that Xbox is solely a console. Through its partnerships with major brands, the Xbox ecosystem has broadened to PC, mobile devices, gaming handhelds, and now cars.

Microsoft doesn’t go as far as to list all models that have access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. However, it is confirmed that the vehicle will have to have access to the webOS Automotive platform as a requirement.

“Our work with LG is the latest example of Xbox expanding to new places, building on partnerships that already bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to mobile devices, PCs, and TVs,” the company says. “By adding vehicles to the mix, we’re giving players more choice than ever in how they enjoy their games.”
