WhatsApp Finally Lets You Translate Messages Instantly: Here’s How

Whatsapp translations.

Meta’s WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that lets you translate messages right inside the app. If someone texts you in a language you don’t understand, just long-press the message and tap “Translate.” You can pick the languages you want, and once downloaded, they’ll stay saved for future use.

It works in one-on-one chats, group chats, and even Channel updates. On Android, you’ll also have the option to turn on automatic translations for an entire conversation so every new message comes through in your chosen language. Now that’s pretty helpful.

The translations happen directly on your phone, so WhatsApp says it can’t see them.

The update is starting to roll out gradually today. Android users will get translations in six languages at launch — English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic — while iPhone users will see support for more than 19 languages (the same languages as part of the Translate app in iOS).

“We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply with loved ones and communities around the globe,” concluded WhatsApp on Tuesday.

We’re not seeing this just yet in WhatsApp on iOS in Canada, but stay tuned. Let us know if you’re seeing this go live.
