Apple’s Secret ‘Veritas’ Chatbot Could Be Siri’s Make-or-Break Moment

Apple is secretly running a ChatGPT-style iPhone app to get ready for a major Siri overhaul coming next year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The app, code-named Veritas (Latin for “truth”), isn’t something you’ll see in the App Store. Instead, Apple staff are using it behind the scenes to test what the new Siri can do. That includes searching through your personal data (like songs or emails) and carrying out in-app actions such as photo editing. Employees can also run longer back-and-forth conversations and see if Siri can keep track of context across chats.

The new Siri, powered by Apple’s upgraded system called Linwood, is now expected to launch as early as March. Apple had planned to release it last spring, but Bloomberg reports testing showed features failed about a third of the time—forcing delays and reshuffling inside Apple’s AI team.

CEO Tim Cook recently told staff the company needs to win in AI, calling it “the biggest transformation in decades.” Apple has also been in talks with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google about possibly working their models into Siri.

Beyond Siri on iPhones, Apple is said to be exploring AI-powered updates for the HomePod and Apple TV, plus a fresh look for Siri later next year. The goal: get back in the AI race against Google and Samsung, who are already pushing these kinds of features.
