Disney+ Canada Aligns With U.S. as Hulu Replaces Star

Disney+ is rebranding its general entertainment hub in Canada. Starting October 8, the Star section on Disney+ will be replaced by Hulu, aligning the Canadian platform with the U.S. and other international markets.

The content won’t change—shows like Only Murders in the Building, The Kardashians, and Futurama will remain available—but they’ll now appear under the Hulu label. Disney says this move is part of its plan to create a fully unified app experience across markets in 2026.

Alongside the rebrand, Disney+ is rolling out design changes, including a new navigation bar with tabs for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN in the U.S. (depending on subscription). A new “For You” tab will highlight personalized recommendations, powered by updated algorithms.

Hulu first launched in the U.S. in 2008 as a joint venture between NBC, Fox, and later Disney, offering next-day TV episodes and eventually growing into a major ad-supported streaming platform with original hits like The Handmaid’s Tale. Disney took majority control after buying 21st Century Fox in 2019 and now has full ownership as of last year.

Unlike in the U.S., Hulu never came to Canada because most of its content was already tied up in licensing deals with Canadian broadcasters, so Disney instead created Star on Disney+ as the international alternative. That strategy is now shifting, with Star being rebranded as Hulu in Canada and other markets in October 2025 to unify Disney’s global streaming brand, which is where we are today.

As for what else is coming? Disney says subscribers can also expect updated artwork, easier navigation, new tags like “Season Finale” or “New Series,” and widgets for iOS to jump directly into programming. More features are expected in the lead-up to the integrated Disney+ and Hulu app next year.
