ChatGPT Can Now Chat With Apps Like Spotify and More — Here’s How

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into more than just a chatbot—it’s becoming a platform for interactive apps. The company announced a major update that lets you use real apps directly inside ChatGPT, all through natural conversation.

Here’s the idea: you can now tell ChatGPT things like “Spotify, make me a playlist for my party” or “Show me homes on Zillow under $700,000,” and it will actually open those apps right in the chat window — no new tabs, no switching screens.

OpenAI says this new feature works with an Apps SDK that lets developers build their own tools for ChatGPT. These apps show up when you need them — ChatGPT might suggest one if it notices you’re planning a trip or designing something. You can interact with the app directly in the chat, using buttons, maps, or sliders instead of typing commands.

At launch, there are already big names involved: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. OpenAI says more apps—like AllTrails, DoorDash, Khan Academy, Instacart, Peloton, OpenTable, Target, TheFork, Tripadvisor, Thumbtack, and Uber—are coming later this year.

Developers can start building today using the Apps SDK preview, which is open source and based on OpenAI’s new Model Context Protocol (MCP). The company says apps will need to follow strict privacy rules, showing users what data is shared before connecting.

These new ChatGPT apps are available now for all users (outside of the EU because the EU has special rules for itself), including those on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.

OpenAI also now has a staggering 800 million weekly active users, which is insane.

To use Spotify in ChatGPT, just mention Spotify in your message. The first time, you’ll be asked to connect your Spotify account. After that, you can ask for songs, artists, playlists, or recommendations based on your mood or theme. ChatGPT will pull up Spotify right in the chat, and tapping a song opens it in the Spotify app to play.

It’s a huge step for OpenAI—and it kind of makes you wonder: why hasn’t Apple done something this useful yet? Apple keeps promising smarter AI for Siri and iOS, but OpenAI just made ChatGPT feel more like an all-in-one assistant that can actually do things –not just talk about them.

This announcement was made at OpenAI’s DevDay which took place today. Check out the video demo below:
