Review: Logitech MX Master 4—Familiar, But With a New Feel

Logitech MX 4 mouse 1.Logitech sent us the new MX Master 4 to test out, and it’s the latest update to one of the most popular premium mice around. We’ve been using the MX Master 3 for years (we never upgraded to the 3S), so we were curious to see how the new model feels day to day. Logitech announced the new MX Master 4 at the end of September.

Right away, the MX Master 4 looks slick. The buttons now have an opaque translucent finish, and the clicks are noticeably quieter. Logitech also added haptic feedback for the first time, which lets you feel subtle vibrations when performing certain actions — like shortcuts, gestures, or tools in apps such as Photoshop and Lightroom.

That said, the new design might not be for everyone. While it’s still comfortable to hold, we found the Master 3’s textured grip better overall, despite the Master 4 being slightly larger in height and width and a bit heavier. The Master 4’s smoother surface feels a bit slippery, especially if you have larger hands like mine. Because of that, the older model feels more secure and snug in the palm. That might change over time as I get used to the new finish, but for now, I miss the extra grip.

The Haptic Sense Panel is cool in theory—it buzzes when certain actions trigger—but I didn’t find it particularly helpful for my workflow. Plus, having it constantly vibrate might affect battery life, which is stated at 70 days on a full charge (USB-C charging; same location as before at the top of the mouse). On the other hand, the new Actions Ring shortcuts are genuinely useful. With one press, you can jump to tools, filters, or other custom shortcuts right at your cursor. It’s a nice time-saver once you set it up. Logitech’s Options+ software has mouse customization locked down. It’s hard to switch away to any other mouse brand if you’re used to the custom features for your workflow.

Scrolling and tracking are still excellent, thanks to Logitech’s MagSpeed scroll wheel and 8K DPI sensor that works on nearly any surface, including glass. Connectivity has also improved with stronger wireless performance and a USB-C receiver option.

Setting up the MX Master 4 is easy. Just plug in the USB-C dongle and it will connect. Logitech Options+ makes it dead easy to copy over settings from your old MX Master mouse with one click:

Final Thoughts

The MX Master 4 is priced at $159.99 and doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it refines an already excellent mouse with quieter clicks, haptics, and improved connectivity. It’s a solid upgrade if you’re coming from an older model—though if you love the grippy feel of the MX Master 3, you might need some time to adjust to the smoother surface (I’m enjoying the MX Master 4 and will stick with it for now). For most users, this is still the best all-around productivity mouse you can buy — just with a few new tricks up its sleeve. If you’ve never used an MX Master series mouse from Logitech, you are in for a treat.
