Apple’s Next iPhone Air Lives On With a Major Redesign, Says Report

Apple is reportedly redesigning the iPhone Air to make its next iteration more appealing to consumers — and that could include adding a second rear camera. According to a new report from The Information, the company has delayed the launch of the second-generation iPhone Air to work on the redesign, with engineers now aiming for a spring 2027 release window.
Apple originally planned to launch the iPhone Air 2 in fall 2026, but those plans were shelved as the company scaled back production of the first-generation model amid weak demand. The same publication recently reported that Apple had decided to cancel the iPhone Air 2 altogether after disappointing sales, so this latest development suggests the fate of the iPhone Air line remains very much up in the air.
The first iPhone Air debuted earlier this year as Apple’s thinnest-ever smartphone, but its sleek form factor came with compromises. Reviewers praised its ultrathin design while criticizing its single-lens camera setup and lack of certain “Pro” features.
According to The Information, adding a second camera lens is a key part of Apple’s redesign efforts — a move aimed at addressing one of the main consumer complaints with the iPhone Air. This also lines up with a recent report from Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, who said the next iPhone Air would feature a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera alongside the existing 48MP Fusion Main lens.
Apple reportedly instructed suppliers to cut production of the iPhone Air to near “end-of-production” levels just weeks after launch, signalling how quickly the model’s momentum faded. That’s likely one reason Apple is taking its time to rethink the product before committing to a full second-generation release.
This new timeline also reinforces growing reports that Apple plans to shake up its iPhone launch schedule with the iPhone 18 lineup. The higher-end iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple’s first foldable iPhone are still expected to arrive in September 2026, while the base iPhone 18 and entry-level iPhone 18e will reportedly launch in spring 2027. If the redesigned iPhone Air 2 makes it to production, it could debut alongside those devices as a more premium option in that cycle.
If Apple ends up scrapping the iPhone Air 2 entirely, though, the upcoming foldable iPhone — which previous reports have described as resembling “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side” — could ultimately serve as the spiritual successor to Apple’s thinnest smartphone ever.

I heard they were planning to add not only a second camera but also a second speaker and the vapour chamber cooling. If they could do that it should address most concerns, and reposition the device as truly a “mid tier” model, à la the iPad Air and soon to the the MacBook Air when they release the new low cost MacBook (only) with iPhone processor.
