Horizon Steel Frontiers MMORPG Announced for iOS and Android

Sony and NCSoft have revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new MMORPG in the Horizon universe that’s designed specifically for mobile devices.
NCSoft, the South Korean developer, has a background in MMO development, and Horizon Steel Frontiers is the latest beast designed by the studio. The game is being made in collaboration with Horizon house Guerrilla, as it will be set in the same universe.
According to the company, Horizon Steel Frontiers is set in the Deadlands, where machine hunters dwell. The game is inspired by the series’ hunting-action gameplay while ” introducing advanced MMORPG systems. While the core Horizon series has players following Aloy’s story, players will be creating their own character in Horizon Steel Frontiers. The title will also feature “deeply customizable combat and extensive player freedom.”
Check out the gameplay trailer below:
From the looks of the game, players can explore the Deadlands and work with other players to defeat enemies and hunt for resources. Engage in raid-style boss battles and take on challenging enemies. It appears as though a lot of inspiration has also been taken from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series and its PVE gameplay loop.
It’s not yet known where in the Horizon timeline the game takes place, so it’s unclear how much crossover it’ll have with Horizon Zero Dawn or Horizon Forbidden West.
There has been no release information given about Horizon Steel Frontiers. However, it has been revealed that the game has been specifically designed to run on iOS and Android. However, it will also be playable on PC via Purple, NCSoft’s proprietary game platform. As of the time of the announcement, there’s no word on whether or not it’ll arrive on PlayStation 5 down the road.
In 2022, Guerilla was reported to have been hiring for a new “online project” via VGC. Descriptions for the job postings referenced a new Horizon game. Thus, it’s expected that on top of a third mainline entry in the series, another online game may be in development, separate from Horizon Steel Frontiers.
