ChatGPT Group Chats Now Available to Users Worldwide

OpenAI has officially enabled group chats in ChatGPT for all users worldwide, marking a shift from one-on-one interactions to a more collaborative AI experience.

ChatGPT Group.

The feature, which was trialled in a handful of regions last week, is now rolling out to everyone on the ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.

During its pilot phase, OpenAI tested the group chat function in countries such as Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. After receiving encouraging feedback, it has expanded the feature globally over the following days.

The new group chat interface allows up to 20 participants, including ChatGPT itself, to share a conversation. To start a group, users tap the “people” icon in the top-right corner of a chat window. This either begins a fresh group or converts an existing conversation into a group chat by duplicating the original thread.

Invitations are shared via link, and once people join, each participant is asked to set up a simple profile with a name, username, and photo for clarity.

In the group setting, ChatGPT has been trained to “read the room.” It monitors conversation flow and decides when to interject as needed. You can prompt it to respond by mentioning the word “ChatGPT” directly in the chat. The AI also supports message reactions via emojis, and can reference users’ profile pictures when producing in-chat replies or images.

Functionally, group chats are similar to regular ChatGPT conversations in terms of capabilities: users can share files, upload images, perform searches, and dictate messages. The backend runs on GPT-5.1 Auto, which dynamically selects the best model available for that user’s subscription tier.

For younger users under 18, there are safeguards. OpenAI limits exposure to sensitive content within group chats for such users. There is also a parental control option that allows guardians to disable group chats entirely.

OpenAI describes the global launch as just the beginning of a broader vision. The company sees group chats as a way to turn ChatGPT into a shared workspace.
