Wealthsimple’s Visa Infinite Privilege Metal Card Is Wild: Hands-On

Wealthsimple’s new Visa Infinite Privilege credit card has started landing in customers’ mailboxes, offering a premium, all-black metal design (only for Premium and Generation clients; others get plastic) and a long list of travel and cash-back perks. There’s still a long waitlist for the company’s Visa Infinite and Infinite Privilege cards.

The card is aimed at Wealthsimple clients who qualify for the company’s top-tier credit offering, which includes 2% cash back, no foreign transaction fees, and a full suite of Visa Infinite Privilege travel insurance benefits.

After a long delivery wait (thanks to Canada Post being Canada Post), an iPhone in Canada reader’s unboxing shows the card arrives in minimalist packaging with a clean presentation. The metal card itself looks pretty sleek, with a matte black finish and a noticeably hefty weight compared to standard plastic cards. It feels more like a premium metal membership pass than a regular credit card. The edges show off metal that’s not painted.

The envelope reads, “Meet the only credit card you’ll need”. Nothing else comes with the card, besides the envelope seen above. The card itself weighs 16.9 grams, compared to a regular plastic card that weighs about 5 grams. So yeah, the metal card is 3x heavier in your wallet.

Wealthsimple’s Privilege card includes perks like airport lounge access through Visa’s airport network, trip interruption and baggage insurance, car-rental coverage, hotel benefits through the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection, and concierge access. It also charges no FX fees and earns the same 2% cash back as Wealthsimple’s standard card, so this is one to use while travelling.

If you couple it with Wealthsimple’s chequing account debit card, you can also get reimbursed ATM fees while travelling.

To get the Privilege version, users need to meet Visa Infinite Privilege criteria, such as higher income, significant assets held with Wealthsimple, or higher annual card spending. Applicants join a waitlist through the Wealthsimple app and receive an invite once they’re eligible.

For customers who’ve been waiting to try the metal card themselves, the design alone makes a strong first impression—even if it took a little longer than expected to show up. It’s a subtle flex for your ego when you actually need to pull out the physical card to pay for something (and not use Apple Pay).

The Wealthsimple Visa Infinite line of credit cards have a $20 monthly fee but it’s waived for Premium or Generation clients, or those with a direct deposit of at least $4,000 sent to their chequing account every 30 days.

Can you confirm if the card supports tap-to-pay? Usually, metal cards can't do NFC payments.
