Bell Just Made a Huge Change to Fibe TV in Ontario and Quebec

Bell fibe tv no hardware.

Bell has rolled out a major update to Fibe TV in Ontario and Quebec, letting customers stream live and on demand channels without needing a set top box. The move lets people watch on Smart TVs and streaming devices they already own, as long as the device is supported.

The Fibe TV app now works on compatible Samsung, LG and Roku Smart TVs. Bell says the full compatibility list is available on its support site.

The shift means customers can add extra TVs without booking an installation or paying for additional hardware. Watching on another screen is as simple as downloading the app and signing in. The service still includes cloud PVR, restart features and TVOD purchases when paired with Bell Internet.

In a statement to iPhone in Canada, Blaik Kirby, Group President of Consumer and Small Business at Bell, said on Thursday, “At Bell, we’re focused on making life simpler. By eliminating the set-top box and bringing Fibe TV directly to the Smart TVs and streaming devices our customers already own, we’re providing the same great experience – without the hassle.”

“Expanding Fibe TV to LG webOS Smart TVs builds on our long-standing partnership with Bell and reflects our shared commitment to delivering more choice, convenience, and flexibility to Canadian viewers. With Fibe TV now available directly on the LG home screen, customers can enjoy faster, more intuitive access to the content they love through our webOS platform and Magic Remote,” said Matthew Durgin, VP of Content and Services at LG Electronics North America, in a statement.

Fibe TV has over 500 live and on demand channels for those watching at home, with over 450 on the go on mobile devices. The service requires a Fibe internet subscription. You can already watch Fibe TV on Google Chromecast, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and support for AirPlay.

“Our number one goal is always to give our customers the best platform experience possible, They’ve been asking for Fibe TV, and we listened—we can’t wait for our users to experience all that Fibe TV has to offer,” said Roku Canada’s Mary Anne Taylor, Head of Content Distribution.

Now, we knew this was coming, as Bell first teased the removal of the set top box back in October, at its Investor Day event.

For anyone who still prefers a physical receiver, Bell says set top boxes will continue to be available.

I’ve been using tv instead of the digital box (old, with a HD) ever since it died years ago. The biggest problem is that the recoded program self deletes after 24 hours even though it’s supposed to be available for streaming for 30 days. Have you experienced similar issue with your streamer box?

I have not really used that feature actually, but I know it is there! Maybe they will fix that with an update being that they are going more this route then the physical box!

Thanks! I wouldn’t hold my breath though, I tried their app support and they just gave me runaround.
