Apple appears closer than ever to entering the foldable smartphone market after years of rumors and speculation, with several recent leaks suggesting its first foldable iPhone will have a more compact outside display than previously expected.
According to an earlier report by The Information, the external screen of Apple’s anticipated foldable will measure around 5.3 inches when closed, putting it in a similar size class to older iPhone models aimed at users who prefer smaller devices.
However, a new MacRumors report highlights that this 5.3-inch cover display may actually be narrower than many current smartphone front panels, a choice some analysts believe could help Apple deliver a more comfortable handheld experience when closed.
Upon unfolding, however, the screen is expected to expand into a much larger display roughly 7.7 inches across, creating a tablet-like workspace ideal for browsing, multitasking, reading, gaming, and creative apps. Several insiders note that this design uses a book-style hinge similar to existing foldable models, but Apple could choose screen aspect ratios and dimensions that better integrate with iPad-style experiences.
One reason Apple might choose a relatively small outer display is related to how the foldable design impacts internal and external panel proportions. Taller outer displays often translate into squarer internal screens when opened, which can feel awkward for typical video content and productivity tasks.
Industry estimates also suggest Apple’s foldable could appear alongside the broader iPhone 18 lineup in 2026, although some supply chain sources caution that manufacturing challenges could limit initial availability or push some shipments into early 2027. Production constraints around flexible screens and hinges remain a common issue for foldable phones.
In addition to the display, insiders also expect Apple’s first foldable to include a premium chassis and camera system, with multiple lenses and potentially side-mounted Touch ID in place of a traditional Face ID sensor due to internal space tradeoffs.
