Zootopia 2 Just Beat Frozen 2 to Become Disney’s Biggest Animated Movie Ever
Disney has a new king of the jungle. The animated sequel “Zootopia 2” has officially climbed to the top of the record books, becoming the highest-grossing film in Walt Disney Animation history. With a global total of $1.46 billion US, the film narrowly edged out the previous record holder, 2019’s “Frozen 2,” which brought in $1.45 billion, according to Variety.
So far, Zootopia 2 has made $333 million in North America and $1.13 billion internationally. The movie also saw a strong boost over the Christmas holiday weekend, pulling in $87.9 million in its fifth week in theatres.
The film crossed the $1 billion global mark in just 17 days, making it the fastest PG-rated movie ever to reach that milestone. Its biggest success has come from China, where the sequel has already earned more than $500 million, by far the highest total for a U.S. movie in the market in recent years. The next closest Hollywood title is Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is nearing $100 million since opening in December.
Including Zootopia 2, only three movies have passed $1 billion globally this year. That list also includes Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake with $1.03 billion, and China’s animated hit Ne Zha 2, which leads the year with more than $2.2 billion.
Zootopia 2 brings back Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde. The sequel reunites the duo as police partners as they investigate a new mystery involving reptiles that threatens to disrupt life in the city of Zootopia.
While the film is only available in theatres now, it will eventually make its way to Disney+ for streaming.
