Google is expanding its use of Gemini inside Gmail, with several AI-powered features now available to users at no cost.

According to Blake Barnes, Google’s vice-president of product for Gmail, Gemini tools that previously required a paid subscription are now being rolled out for free to all users.

Google says the changes are meant to help people manage growing inboxes and spend less time digging through long email threads, according to Barnes on Thursday.

One of the main additions is AI-generated conversation summaries. When users open long email threads, Gmail can now automatically generate a short overview highlighting the key points. This feature is rolling out globally and does not require a paid plan.

Gmail is also expanding its writing tools. Features like Help Me Write and updated Suggested Replies are now free, allowing users to draft or refine emails and get context-aware reply suggestions based on the conversation. Google says these tools are designed to match a user’s writing style rather than generate generic responses.

Some Gemini features still remain behind a paywall. The ability to ask Gmail direct questions using natural language, such as searching past emails for specific details, and advanced proofreading tools are limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google is also testing a new AI-powered inbox view that automatically surfaces important emails, deadlines, and reminders while pushing less urgent messages out of the way. This feature, called AI Inbox, is currently available to a small group of testers and is expected to roll out more broadly in the coming months.

The updates are powered by Google’s latest Gemini models and are launching first in the U.S. in English, with additional languages and regions planned later. Google says more Gemini features will continue to be added to Gmail throughout 2026.

Canadian Gmail users can now access several Gemini AI features for free, including automatic conversation summaries that quickly highlight key points in long email threads, the Help Me Write tool for drafting or polishing emails, and upgraded Suggested Replies that generate context-aware responses matched to the tone of the conversation. Getting these Gemini features free for Gmail is a great move by Google. It keeps people locked into Gmail plus it gets more people using Gemini.
