Tesla Adds a Budget Model Y in Canada With Features Missing in the U.S.

Tesla has added a new Model Y Standard rear-wheel-drive to its Canadian lineup, giving buyers a cheaper way to get into its best-selling electric SUV.

The new version starts at about $49,990 CAD in Canada, undercutting the Model Y Premium All-Wheel Drive by roughly $15,000 CAD, which until now had been the lowest-priced option.

Interestingly, if we take exchange rates into account, the Model Y Standard is cheaper in Canada versus the USA, which starts at $39,990 USD. That price equates to about $55,592 CAD. So the Standard Model Y Canadian pricing is about $5,600 ‘cheaper’.

To put this Standard Model Y pricing into comparisons with other popular compact SUVs in Canada? A 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid starts at $40,562 CAD.

The Model Y Standard is rear-wheel drive and is rated for about 463 kilometres of range on a full charge. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 7.2 seconds, making it slower than the higher-end trims. It comes with 18-inch wheels, a basic black interior, and a limited selection of paint colours that cost extra.

Update: In Canada, the Standard model also includes FM radio that’s missing from the U.S. version. Looks like Autosteer and Basic Autopilot is not included, despite the company’s website initially stating this. You only get Traffic-aware cruise control.

Tesla says the first deliveries are expected in about four to six weeks. The vehicle still has access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and buyers can add Full Self-Driving for an additional fee of $11,000 CAD (or $99 per month subscription).

Compared with the previous entry-level Model Y in Canada, the Premium All-Wheel Drive, the Standard trades features for a lower price. It drops all-wheel drive in favour of a single rear motor, offers less range, uses smaller wheels, and skips some comfort and performance upgrades.

Higher trims include dual motors, quicker acceleration, and more interior and performance options that are not standard on the base model.

The new Standard version is also made at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany, which is seen as producing some quality vehicles, similar to the company’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China.

Also new in Canada? Tesla has introduced the colour Marine Blue, a $1,300 upgrade, that’s only available for the higher priced Premium and Performance models. Also, the Performance Model Y is now available for lease (if you can afford it).

Check out how Tesla’s Model Y Standard is different below:

Drivetrain and performance

  • Rear-wheel drive only, instead of dual-motor all-wheel drive

  • Slower acceleration at 7.2 seconds from 0–100 km/h

  • Lower overall range at 463 km compared to higher trims

Audio system

  • 7-speaker setup

  • Premium and Performance add a 15-speaker system with a subwoofer

Interior and materials

  • Closed glass roof instead of a panoramic glass roof

  • Textile interior rather than perforated vegan leather

  • No customizable wraparound ambient lighting

  • Open center console without extended storage

  • Manual-adjust steering wheel instead of power-adjust

Displays and rear passenger features

  • No second-row touchscreen

  • Smaller first-row display compared to the Performance model’s QHD screen

Climate control and air filtration

  • Standard particulate and odour filter only

  • No HEPA filter or Bioweapon Defense Mode

  • Manual-adjust second-row air vents instead of touchscreen control

Seating and comfort

  • Heated front cloth seats only

  • No ventilated front seats

  • No heated second-row seats

  • Manual-folding second-row seats instead of power-folding and reclining

Exterior lighting and mirrors

  • Basic LED headlights instead of LED lightbars

  • No adaptive high-beam functionality

  • Manual-folding side mirrors instead of power-folding and auto-dimming

Suspension and ride quality

  • Passive shock absorbers

  • Premium adds frequency-dependent suspension

  • Performance adds electronically controlled adaptive suspension

Despite these cutbacks, the Model Y Standard still includes core Tesla features such as Traffic-aware cruise control, FM radio, wireless phone charging, full connectivity, access to the Supercharger network, and the same active safety systems found across the lineup. It’s one of the safest cars on the road today.
