WhatsApp Adds ‘Lockdown’ Feature to Protect Against Hackers

WhatsApp is rolling out a new privacy feature designed for users who need an extra layer of protection against sophisticated digital threats. Announced today in a blog post, the new feature is called Strict Account Settings and is being described as a lockdown-style option that pushes account privacy to its most restrictive limits.

“At WhatsApp, we think you should be able to have a private conversation online, just like you would in-person,” the company said. “We will always defend that right to privacy for everyone, starting with default end-to-end encryption.” While those protections already apply to all users, WhatsApp acknowledged that some people — such as journalists, activists, or public-facing figures — may face “rare and highly-sophisticated cyber attacks” that require stronger safeguards.

When enabled, Strict Account Settings automatically locks certain privacy options to their most restrictive configuration. This includes limiting how WhatsApp functions in key areas, such as blocking attachments and media from people who aren’t in your contacts. According to WhatsApp, the feature can be turned on by heading to Settings > Privacy > Advanced, though it’s not available for everyone just yet and will be rolling out gradually over the coming weeks.

“This is one of many ways we’re working to protect you from the most sophisticated of cyber threats,” WhatsApp explained. The company also highlighted behind-the-scenes security work, including the rollout of the Rust programming language to help protect photos, videos, and messages from spyware and other exploits.

The introduction of Strict Account Settings builds on WhatsApp’s broader push around privacy and control. Last year, the company rolled out its Advanced Chat Privacy feature, which gave users more granular control over how conversations could be exported or shared. Earlier this month, WhatsApp also introduced new updates aimed at making group chats less chaotic and easier to follow, showing a continued focus on improving both security and usability.

While Strict Account Settings won’t be necessary for most everyday users, its existence underscores WhatsApp’s positioning as a privacy-first messaging platform — especially at a time when concerns around surveillance, spyware, and account takeovers continue to grow. For those who need it, this new lockdown-style mode could be a valuable addition.
