Snap Spins off Specs Inc. Ahead of Consumer Specs AR Glasses Release

Snap Inc. has announced that it is spinning off a subsidiary brand dubbed Specs Inc. As indicated by its name, the new brand will operate as a separate business entity, invested in establishing new partnerships and further developing the upcoming Specs AR smartglasses.

Specs Inc. is announced to be “a wholly-owned subsidiary that provides greater operational focus and alignment, enables new partnerships and capital flexibility.” Snap has been developing its Specs smartglasses, primarily with the focus on developers and strategy partners. However, a consumer-made pair of Specs are in development.

“Specs are launching at an important time, as artificial intelligence transforms the way that we use our computers. Instead of an operating system that expects us to do all of the work, Specs feature a first-of-its-kind Intelligence System that uses its understanding of you and your world to help get things done on your behalf while protecting and respecting your privacy,” Snap Inc. says in a statement, adding, “We’re building a computer that we hope you’ll use less, because it does more for you.”

Last year, CEO Evan Spiegel discussed the upcoming consumer-level AR smartglasses. Offering a similar suite of tools to the fifth-generation Spectacles, the upcoming Specs are designed to be worn in public, offering users a workstation, browsing, streaming, and more. Specs smartglasses have see-through lenses that can add 3D virtual objects within the lens. These can be interactive or add contextual information to the world around us.

Specs Inc. developers are already building gaming and education-focused apps with Specs. This includes SustainaSpecs for sustainability analysis of raw materials. Seasonal Snap Sabre is an AR rhythm game built for Specs.

Snap Inc. nor the newly established Specs Inc. has detailed when the Specs AR glasses will be released for consumers. However, this announcement does bode well for the eventual release, as there appears to be a firm commitment to the product.
