Spotify Launches Group Chat Feature Following Testing Period

Spotify has officially launched its group chat messaging feature. After a period of limited testing, the streamer has released the feature to the masses, letting users chat with up to 10 friends to share music, playlists and podcasts.

Thanks to the expansion of its messaging feature, users can engage in a group chat thread with one another. Here, Spotify makes it easy to share content like a song, podcast, or audiobook. Users are able to hit the ‘Share’ icon and then send that piece of content to a group chat for others to discover.

In a blog post, Spotify writes, “Starting today, you can now share to a group through Spotify Messages. Share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks you’re listening to with up to 10 friends and family members per chat.”

Much like Spotify’s standardized one-on-one messaging feature, users must be 16 or above to engage in messaging. The group chat feature requires users to opt in and accept a message request from another user for the chat to begin.

Last year, Spotify launched its DM feature, with the goal of helping users organize suggestions between one another. At first, the company released a dedicated messaging system for both Free and Premium users to send messages to one another. Over time, the company has been experimenting with expanded support, now with a group of up to 10 users. Spotify ensures users that DM conversations are protected by “industry-standard encryption.”

With the incorporation of DMs, Spotify updated its policies within its Terms of Use and Platform Rules against illegal and harmful content. Messages that may infringe on its policies may be reported by holding down on the message and selecting ‘Report’. Users can also be blocked.
