Download: OpenAI Launches Codex ‘Command Centre’ App for Mac Developers

openai codex app

OpenAI has released a new macOS app for Codex, its AI coding assistant, aimed at developers who want to work with multiple AI agents at the same time.

In simple terms, the app lets people give multiple AI helpers different jobs at the same time, watch what they’re doing, and step in to review or fix their work, instead of working on one task at a time.

The new Codex app acts as a desktop hub where developers can run several coding agents in parallel, switch between tasks without losing context, and review or edit code changes as they happen. Instead of working through a terminal or IDE alone, the app gives users a central place to supervise longer-running projects that can take hours or days.

Codex agents in the app work in separate threads tied to specific projects. Each agent can run on its own copy of a codebase, which reduces conflicts and lets developers explore different approaches at once. Changes can be reviewed inside the app or opened directly in a code editor.

The app also supports “skills,” which let Codex do more than just write code. These skills allow the AI to pull in design files, manage bug trackers, deploy apps to cloud services, generate images, or create documents like spreadsheets and PDFs. Developers can create their own skills or share them across a team.

OpenAI says Codex can also run scheduled background tasks using a feature called Automations. These let developers assign routine work, such as checking for build failures or summarizing issues, and review the results later.

The Codex app is available now on macOS and you can download it here. It works with existing Codex setups in the command line and IDEs, and uses the same account login.

For now, Codex access is included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscriptions. OpenAI is also temporarily making Codex available to some free users and increasing usage limits across paid plans.

OpenAI says more than a million developers used Codex in the past month, and that a Windows version of the app is planned for later (so don’t be sad, PC users).
