Sony Kills Bluepoint Games: Why the Demon’s Souls Studio is Closing

Sony has officially closed Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based studio renowned as the industry’s premier specialist for high-end remakes.
The move marks a sudden end for the developer, which Sony only officially acquired in 2021 after years of successful partnership. The decision is part of a broader restructuring at Sony to combat the skyrocketing costs of modern game development.
According to a report from Bloomberg, the closure reflects a strategic pivot toward Sony’s largest “tentpole” franchises. A Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that the move was “a difficult decision, but necessary to align our resources with our long-term goals.” The company added that while it is attempting to relocate staff, many of the studio’s specialized engineers and artists face layoffs.
Bluepoint Games earned its reputation by rebuilding PlayStation classics from the ground up for modern hardware. Their work on the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls served as the primary technical showcase for the PlayStation 5 launch, demonstrating the studio’s mastery of 4K visuals and near-instant loading times. Before that, their 2018 reimagining of Shadow of the Colossus was hailed by IGN as “a masterpiece of technical preservation.”
The shutdown has sparked frustration among fans who have spent years calling for Bluepoint to handle a remake of the 2015 cult classic Bloodborne. In a 2021 interview with the PlayStation Blog following their acquisition, Bluepoint President Marco Thrush stated that the team’s next step was “original content,” marking a move away from remakes.

The loss of Bluepoint follows a trend of Sony shuttering specialized teams, similar to the 2024 closure of London Studio and layoffs at Firesprite.
