Samsung Adds Perplexity as New Galaxy AI Agent

Samsung is changing the way we interact with our smartphones by opening up its AI platform to more than just one assistant. Ahead of its major Galaxy Unpacked event this week, the company announced that Galaxy AI is moving toward a multi-agent ecosystem.

This means that instead of being forced to use only one AI tool, users will be able to choose between different assistants like Bixby, Google Gemini, and now Perplexity.

This shift is a big deal because it moves away from the “walled garden” approach we often see in the tech world, like Siri on the iPhone. However, Samsung’s internal research shows that people are already moving away from that model. According to the company, nearly eight in ten users now rely on more than two different types of AI agents to get things done throughout their day.

To meet this demand, Samsung is introducing Perplexity as a deeply integrated agent on its upcoming flagship devices, likely starting with the Galaxy S26 series. Unlike a standard app that you download from a store, this integration happens at the system level. You will be able to wake the assistant by saying “Hey Plex” or by pressing and holding the side button.

The goal is to let Galaxy AI coordinate between different AI services to handle complex, multi-step tasks. For example, Perplexity will be embedded into core apps like Samsung Notes, Clock, Gallery, Reminder, and Calendar. This could allow you to research a travel destination, save the notes, and set a calendar reminder all in one go without manually switching apps.

Won-Joon Choi, the President and Head of the R&D Office at Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business, explained the vision behind this move. He stated: “We’ve been committed to building an open and inclusive integrated AI ecosystem that gives users more choice, flexibility and control to get complex tasks done quickly and easily.”

For those of us who follow the iPhone closely, this is an interesting contrast to Apple Intelligence. While Apple focuses on a very tight and private integration with Siri, Samsung is betting that users want more variety. By allowing Perplexity to sit alongside Bixby and Gemini, they are giving users the freedom to use the specific tool that works best for a particular task.

We expect to hear more about how this works during the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 25.
