Freedom Mobile Kills Roaming Fees: Global Data Now in All Plans from $35
Freedom Mobile says it is shaking up the Canadian wireless market again by making international roaming a standard feature rather than a costly add-on. The carrier announced a refreshed lineup of Total Freedom plans today that include its Roam Beyond worldwide data as standard.
Plans start at $35 per month for bring-your-own-device (BYOP) customers after the Digital Discount. Significantly, Roam Beyond data is now recurring every month for entry-level plans, rather than just being a one-time allotment. This means all refreshed plans now include international roaming talk, text, and data for over 120 destinations.
“For years, Canadians have faced expensive roaming fees and the constant worry of overages. With the new Total Freedom plans, we’re putting an end to that,” said Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, on Tuesday. “This is about providing customers more choice, more value, and more freedom.”
The carrier is also highlighting its Price Freeze Promise, which guarantees that the base price of a customer’s plan will never increase as long as they keep it. This comes as federal regulators continue to scrutinize wireless affordability across Canada.
A Freedom Mobile spokesperson told iPhone in Canada that the typical Canadian experience involves either paying high daily fees or “anxiously rationing their data allowance” while travelling. “Freedom Mobile thinks there’s a better way, and today they’re putting their money where their mouth is,” the spokesperson added verbatim.
Coverage from the new plans reach 99% of the Canadian population and are available for both new and existing customers starting today, according to the company. Freedom’s website states a minimum three-month subscription is required for these specific roaming-inclusive plans.
Here are the revamped Freedom Mobile plans that now include global talk, text, and data:
- $35/10GB + 1GB Roam Beyond
- $40/60GB + 5GB Roam Beyond
- $40/100GB + 10GB Roam Beyond (BYOP Offer)
- $50/150GB + 20GB Roam Beyond (BYOP Offer)
- $60/200GB + 30GB Roam Beyond (BYOP Offer)
- $70/250GB + 50GB Roam Beyond (BYOP Offer)
It’s worth noting that the $35/10GB plan has increased in price from $34, and the $40/60GB plan was previously $39/70GB earlier this month. While the 100GB and 150GB plans saw a slight decrease in their Roam Beyond allotments, the $70 plan received a significant bump to 50GB of global data (up from 35GB).
Additionally, plans priced at $40/month and higher now receive a $10/month ongoing bill credit, up from the $9/month credit offered just a week ago.
