Public Mobile Hikes Prices for Some Customers Starting This April
Public Mobile is once again testing the loyalty of its longest-standing customers. The Telus-owned carrier has started sending out text messages to subscribers on its lowest-tier plans, notifying them of a mandatory $4 monthly price increase effective April 1, 2026.
Which plans are affected?
The price hikes seem to be targeted at older legacy and entry-level plans that typically fall under the $25/month mark. Based on user reports, the following changes are coming:
- $20 for 3GB plans are jumping to $24 per month.
- $23 for 6GB plans are increasing to $25 per month.
- $19 Legacy plans are also being flagged for upcoming increases.
Public Mobile is framing the hike with a silver lining, telling users they can log in to switch to a plan with more data for the same new $24 price. However, many users are pointing out that if they only use 2GB or 3GB of data, being forced into a 10GB plan for more money is no benefit at all.
It’s weird to think that a prepaid service like Public Mobile would jack up prices, but without any sort of price freeze guarantee, the wireless carrier is free to do what it pleases.
Where to go for a $20 plan?
With Public Mobile pushing the monthly spend of these customers higher, some are already looking for the exit. If you are looking to stay at or below the $20 mark, here are the alternatives currently being discussed:
- Chatr: Offers a $149 annual plan that works out to about $12.50/month for 2.5GB of data.
- Freedom Mobile: Has a $159 annual plan ($13.25/month) with a Price Freeze Promise.
- No Name Mobile: Currently offers a $19 for 2GB plan (on the Bell network) with auto-top-up.
- Lucky Mobile: Often has Auto-top-up bonuses that can keep costs near $20.
