Koodo’s rollout of faster 5G speeds appears to be reaching more customers, with the Telus flanker now telling some users their plans have been upgraded to speeds of up to 1 Gbps at no extra cost.
In a text message sent to customers, Koodo says: “Voila! Your plan has been upgraded to 5G 1Gbps speeds.” Previously, those that did not have the speed upgrade were capped at up to 250 Mbps 5G speeds.
The carrier adds that customers can use the faster connection for streaming, gaming and browsing, with no extra charge. A 5G-capable device is required, and regular data limits still apply.
The wider rollout follows Koodo’s announcement earlier this year that it would bring 1 Gbps 5G speeds to both new and existing customers.
Back in May, Koodo said new customers on eligible Pick Your Perk plans would get the faster speeds right away, while existing customers would be upgraded automatically over a six-month period.
That timeline suggested the rollout would happen gradually, and the latest customer messages indicate Koodo is still moving more existing accounts over.
At the time, Dan Quick, Vice-President of Mobility Growth Marketing at Telus, said the change was about giving customers more value without forcing them to switch plans.
“By providing our customers with faster 5G speeds at no extra cost, we’re bringing Canadians a more seamless network experience with even greater value, helping them stay connected without needing to change their plan,” Quick said.
Koodo’s move puts it in line with other flanker brands offering faster 5G speeds, including Fido and Virgin Plus.
The message to customers also says 5G speeds of up to 1 Gbps are now available “on all plans,” which suggests the upgrade is becoming much more broadly available than when Koodo first announced the rollout.
