Sony May Cancel PlayStation Games on PC
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony is making a major change to its gaming strategy by pulling back from its plans to release big PlayStation games on PC, thus keeping its titles exclusive to the PlayStation hardware.
For a long time, it felt like almost every big PlayStation hit would eventually make its way to Steam or the Epic Games Store. We saw successful ports for games like God of War and the Spider-Man series. However, the data for early 2026 suggests that the leadership at Sony has had a change of heart.
According to the Bloomberg report, “single-player titles such as last year’s samurai hit Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming action game Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5.” This news is a massive blow to PC fans who were hoping to play the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima on their own rigs. Reports indicate that Sony had actually planned a PC version of Ghost of Yotei but scrapped those plans in recent weeks.
The reasons behind this sudden shift appear to be a mix of financial results and brand protection. While some early ports were huge hits, more recent releases have struggled. For example, God of War: Ragnarök reportedly sold only about 300,000 copies on PC, while Horizon Forbidden West managed roughly 500,000.
There is also a growing concern within Sony that putting games on PC makes the PlayStation console feel less essential. One faction inside the company believes that releasing these titles on other platforms risks damaging the brand and could hurt the sales of the PlayStation 5 and whatever comes next. This is especially relevant now, as rumours suggest the PlayStation 6 might be delayed until 2028 or 2029 because of the ongoing global shortage of AI chips.
Another interesting factor is the competition. Rumours about the next Xbox suggest it might be more like a gaming PC that can run multiple storefronts, including Steam. Sony executives are reportedly not happy with the idea of their flagship games running on hardware branded by their biggest rival.
It is worth noting that this pullback does not apply to every game. Online and live-service games like the upcoming Marathon reboot from Bungie or Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls are still expected to launch on PC.
