Google Signs Global Pact to Combat Online Scams
In an agreement announced at the United Nations Global Fraud Summit in Vienna on March 16, 2026, Google has joined forces with ten other major companies to fight online scams and fraud.
The “Industry Accord Against Online Scams and Fraud” brings together a powerful group of tech and retail giants, including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Target. By signing this pact, these companies have committed to sharing threat intelligence and coordinating their security efforts.
Nathaniel Gleicher, the Global Head of Counter Fraud at Meta, noted that while companies have shared information during specific investigations in the past, this new framework allows for regular exchanges of insights. This means if one company discovers a new scam tactic or a specific group of bad actors, they can quickly alert the rest of the industry to block the threat before it spreads.
The rise of artificial intelligence has given scammers new tools to create highly convincing fake identities and phishing messages. To counter this, the accord highlights the importance of using advanced AI for protection.
Google and its partners plan to deploy AI-driven solutions that can spot sophisticated scam patterns in real time, such as celebrity impersonations or deceptive links designed to look like legitimate banking sites.
Beyond technology, the group is also calling on governments to declare scam prevention a national priority. They are pushing for better cross-border laws that would make it easier for law enforcement to track down criminal networks that operate from different countries.
The fight against online fraud is a massive challenge. In 2024 alone, consumers lost over $16 billion to scams.
