Google Translate Expands Real-Time Headphone Translation to iOS
Following a successful beta period on Android that began last fall, Google is officially bringing its Live Translate feature for headphones to iOS.
This update fulfills a 2026 promise to expand the capability beyond its initial launch markets in the U.S., Mexico, and India. The feature, which turns any pair of headphones with a microphone into a personal interpreter, is also expanding to several new countries today, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the U.K.
When the beta first launched in late 2025, it was restricted to Android users in three countries. Now, Google is scaling the technology to support over 70 languages across both major mobile platforms. Unlike previous iterations that required specific hardware like Pixel Buds, the new version works with any standard pair of wired or wireless headphones.
This means your older AirPods can now have live translation with Google Translate. Apple’s live translation via Apple Intelligence is only for AirPods 4, AirPods Max 2 and AirPods Pro 2 and newer.
“Starting today the beta is rolling out in the Translate app on Android in the U.S., Mexico, and India, works with any pair of headphones, and supports more than 70 languages,” Google stated during the initial announcement. “And we’ll be bringing it to iOS and more countries in 2026.”
The update utilizes Gemini-led AI to move past literal, word-for-word translation. By focusing on context and intent, the system can now interpret complex idioms and phrases based on their actual meaning rather than a direct dictionary definition.
The AI also maintains the original speaker’s tone, cadence, and emphasis, making conversations feel more natural and less like a robotic relay. Users can follow along with live lectures, family dinners, or local announcements in real-time without the delay of passing a phone back and forth.
To try the feature, open the Google Translate app, ensure your headphones are connected, and tap Live translate. This rollout ensures that your international travel behaviours and colourful conversations stay seamless, no matter where you are in the world.
