Netflix Hikes Streaming Prices in the USA but Canada Spared for Now

Netflix has officially increased its subscription prices for customers in the United States, marking the second such hike in just over a year. The changes took effect today, Thursday, March 26, 2026, and impact all three of the streaming giant’s primary tiers for both new and existing members.

In the U.S., the Standard with Ads plan has risen from $7.99 to $8.99 US per month. The ad-free Standard plan, which offers 1080p streaming, increased by $2 to $19.99 US per month. Meanwhile, the top-tier Premium plan, which includes 4K HDR content and spatial audio, now costs $26.99 US per month, up from $24.99.

However, a Netflix spokesperson has confirmed to iPhone in Canada that these price increases do not apply to Canadian subscribers at this time. Current pricing in Canada remains at $7.99 CAD for the ad-supported tier, $18.99 CAD for the Standard plan, and $23.99 CAD for the Premium plan. These rates have been in place since January 2025, when the company last adjusted its Canadian pricing alongside several other international markets.

Netflix justified the American price hike by stating it needs to reinvest in quality entertainment and improve the user experience. The company recently reported strong financial results, surpassing 300 million global subscribers, though it also recently walked away from a multi-billion dollar bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.

American subscribers will receive an email notification 30 days before the new pricing is applied to their specific billing cycle. For now, Canadians can continue to access the service at their existing monthly rates without any immediate changes.

Usually when prices increase in the U.S., it also applies to Canada too at some point. Let’s hope this happens later rather than sooner.
