Google Finally Lets You Change Your Gmail Address: Is Canada Next?

Google is officially rolling out a long-requested feature that allows users to change their Gmail username while keeping their entire digital history intact.

The update, confirmed by Google on Tuesday, marks the end of a decades-old frustration for users who have been stuck with email addresses created years ago.

Previously, if an account ended in @gmail.com, it was impossible to change the primary address without starting a completely new account and losing access to years of Photos, Drive files, and YouTube history, which of course is not ideal.

The feature is now available for all Google Account users in the U.S., following a gradual rollout that was first spotted in late 2025. When a user switches to a new @gmail.com address, their old email does not disappear.

Instead, it becomes an alias, meaning any messages sent to the original address will still land in the same inbox. Users can also continue to sign in using either the old or new credentials, and all existing data across Google’s suite of services remains unaffected.

While the feature offers new flexibility, Google has implemented several limits to prevent abuse. Once a user changes their address, they cannot change or delete it again for a period of 12 months. Furthermore, each account is limited to a maximum of three username changes in total. Some older services, such as Google Calendar events created before the switch, may also still display the original email address.

Here’s how to change your Gmail address:

1. Go to your Google Account settings and tap Personal Info.

2. Tap Email, then Google Account email.

3. If the setting is enabled for you, a ‘Change Google Account email’ button in blue will appear.

We’ve tried using a VPN to change our location to the U.S. and it still won’t show up here in Canada.

For now, this ability is just starting to roll out in the U.S. only. No word on when Canada will get this feature but hopefully it will soon in the future.
