Apple’s Foldable iPhone on Track for 2026 Despite Reports of Delays
The timeline for Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone is facing conflicting reports today as a major supply chain outlet and a top Apple insider clash over potential delays.
A report from Nikkei Asia today suggests Apple is encountering setbacks in the “engineering test phase” of the device. According to their sources, the development issues are “more complex and are taking more time to resolve than Apple had expected.”
“It’s true that more issues than expected have emerged during the early test production phase, and additional time will be needed to resolve them and make necessary adjustments,” one person familiar with the matter told the outlet. They added that “the current situation could put the mass production timeline at risk.”
However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is pushing back on the claims of a delay. He stated that the “Nikkei report is off base” and that the foldable iPhone is “as of now on track for a September debut with the iPhone 18 Pro.” It’s unclear if this is Apple PR speaking to Bloomberg on background and off the record or not, to counter the Nikkei report.
While Gurman noted that “supply could be limited initially,” he maintains the device is “on track to go on sale at the same time or soon after the Pro models.”
The next few weeks are reportedly a crucial stage for the engineering verification tests. If Apple manages to stay on the current schedule, Canadians can expect the folding device to be the centrepiece of the 2026 hardware lineup, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro (get your wallets ready).
