Gemini for Mac is Here: Use This Shortcut to Summon Google’s AI Anywhere
Google has finally released a native Gemini desktop app for Mac, bringing it up to speed with competitors like ChatGPT that have long offered a dedicated macOS experience. Last month, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first leaked the news that a Gemini Mac app was being tested.
The app is designed to integrate directly into the desktop workflow rather than forcing users to rely on a browser tab. It features a dedicated keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) that allows users to pull up the assistant from any screen.
One highlighted feature in this native version is the ability for Gemini to see and understand what is currently on the user’s screen. By sharing a specific window, users can ask the AI to summarize complex charts, analyze local files, or pull data from a spreadsheet without manual copying and pasting. This makes it so much faster to get the answers you need.
For creative tasks, the app also integrates Google’s latest media tools, allowing users to generate images or video clips directly from the desktop interface.
The Gemini app is available now as a free download for all users running macOS 15 or higher. Michael Friedman, Group Product Manager, Gemini App, said that while this launch establishes the foundation for a proactive desktop assistant, more integrated features are expected to be added in the coming months. Google has been killing it with these non-stop Gemini updates across all its platforms lately.

Update: Some users are saying there’s an error when trying to sign in on Mac and with Safari. “Navigation failed because the request was for an HTTP URL with HTTPS-Only enabled” (WebKitErrorDomain:305). So how to fix this? Download Chrome and make it your default browser, as this allows the sign in process to proceed on the web, which then authorizes the Gemini Mac app.
